Living With a Know-It-All

Angry Couple

Did you know that there is actually a psychological term for individuals who are commonly referred to as, ‘know-it-alls’?

The diagnostic terminology is someone who has a decreased sense of intellectual humility. Intellectual humility is what is primarily responsible for how we can accept the incorrectness of our views by admitting that we are wrong.

It was shown that those who lack intellectual humility tend to seek out partners who have high or moderate levels of it themselves.

Key Takeaways:

  • Know-it-all individuals have low levels of intellectual humility which makes them overestimate their correctness.
  • It has been shown that those who have low levels of intellectual humility actually seek partners that are the opposite.
  • Those who have low levels of intellectual humility are less likely to research and double-check their belief system.

“If I’m absolutely certain that I’m right, why should I meet you halfway?” is the common belief most “know it alls” share and this can be detrimental to their relationship; both personal and professional.
